Things to Do in Phu Quoc, Vietnam: Beaches, Hon Thom Cable Car and Where to Spend Your Days

Handcrafted luxury private travel experience in Vietnam designed around your passions.

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island: long white beaches in the south, forest and national park in the north, and a growing mix of resorts, night markets and theme parks. Here are the best things to do in Phu Quoc and how to plan your days.

The best things to do in Phu Quoc

1. Sao Beach

Often called the island's best beach: fine white sand and clear shallow water in a sheltered bay near An Thoi in the south, roughly 25 to 28 km from Duong Dong. It fills with day-trippers from about 10am to 3pm, so go early or late. Ask prices before renting a lounger or ordering food.

2. Long Beach

A long stretch of sand on the west coast, lined with resorts and sunset restaurants. Sunsets here are the daily event.

3. Hon Thom cable car

The ride from An Thoi runs 7,899.9 meters across the sea to Hon Thom island and was certified by Guinness as the world's longest three-rope cable car. The trip takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes each way, depending on the source. Hon Thom has a water park with more than 20 rides. Check current ticket prices on the operator's site.

4. Vinpearl Safari and the north

A large safari park in the north of the island, popular with families.

5. Duong Dong town and night market

The island's main town: a harbor, markets and street food. Ask your hotel for the current night-market hours.

6. Island-hopping and snorkeling

Boat trips from the south visit small islands and reefs in the dry season.

A 3-day Phu Quoc plan

  • Day 1: Long Beach and a sunset dinner.
  • Day 2: the Hon Thom cable car and water park, then Sao Beach in late afternoon.
  • Day 3: a boat day for snorkeling, or Vinpearl Safari.

When to go

Sources agree that the dry season is best, but they differ on the exact months: roughly late November to March or April. The rainy season, around August to October, brings heavier rain and rough seas, although prices are lower. Late October and April are often good shoulder months. See our best time to visit Vietnam.
