How to Get to Phu Quoc Island

Flights, ferries, transfer times from the airport, and the visa rule that only applies to Phu Quoc.

Quick answer

Fly. Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) has direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City (about 1 hour), Hanoi (about 2 hours 10 minutes), Da Nang and several cities elsewhere in Asia. There is no ferry from Ho Chi Minh City: fast boats leave from Rach Gia (about 2.5 hours) and Ha Tien (about 1.5 hours) in the Mekong Delta. Visitors arriving directly from abroad can stay on the island visa-free for 30 days.

Times are typical non-stop flying or sailing times. Routes, airlines and timetables change by season.

Flying to Phu Quoc

Most visitors fly from Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport, where flights to Phu Quoc leave throughout the day. From Hanoi, a direct flight lets you end a trip through the north and centre with a few days on the beach without going back to Saigon. Book early for Tet (late January or February), Vietnamese summer holidays (June–August) and the 30 April–1 May holiday, when domestic fares rise sharply.

Taking the ferry to Phu Quoc

Fast passenger boats run from Rach Gia and Ha Tien to Bai Vong port on Phu Quoc's east coast, about 30 minutes by car from Duong Dong. Slower car ferries also run from both ports. The crossing can be rough from June to September, and sailings are cancelled in storms.

The ferry works well as part of a Mekong Delta journey or an overland route from southern Cambodia, but it is not a shortcut from Ho Chi Minh City.

The 30-day visa-free rule

Phu Quoc has its own entry rule: foreigners who arrive directly from abroad, by air or sea, can stay on the island for up to 30 days without a visa. Your passport must be valid for at least six months, and you should carry proof of onward travel. The exemption does not cover the rest of Vietnam. If Phu Quoc is part of a longer trip, follow the rules in our Vietnam visa guide.

From our team: making the Phu Quoc leg easy

  • End the trip on the island, don't start there. A few beach days after Hanoi, Hoi An and Saigon are a reward; at the start of the trip they are often wasted on jet lag.
  • Choose your coast by season. From November to April the west coast (Long Beach, Ganh Dau) has calm water and sunsets; in the wet season, the sheltered east and south (Bai Sao, Bai Kem) are better for swimming.
  • Allow three nights at least. Two nights means one real beach day once flights are counted.
  • Book the transfer with the hotel or your tour. Taxis at PQC are plentiful, but a booked car avoids negotiating after a flight.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to get to Phu Quoc?
Fly. Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) has frequent direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City (about 1 hour) and Hanoi (about 2 hours 10 minutes), plus Da Nang and several cities elsewhere in Asia. The ferry only makes sense if you are already in the Mekong Delta near Rach Gia or Ha Tien.
Is there a ferry from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc?
No direct one. Ferries to Phu Quoc leave from Rach Gia (about 2.5 hours by fast boat) and Ha Tien (about 1.5 hours) on the Mekong Delta coast. Getting from Ho Chi Minh City to either port takes about 5–7 hours by road, so the whole journey takes most of a day — compared with one hour by air.
How long is the flight from Hanoi to Phu Quoc?
About 2 hours 10 minutes non-stop. Vietnamese carriers fly the route daily, with more flights in the dry season; schedules change, so check current routes when you book.
Do I need a visa for Phu Quoc?
Not if you fly or sail directly to Phu Quoc from abroad and stay on the island: foreign visitors can then stay visa-free for up to 30 days. If you combine Phu Quoc with the mainland (Hanoi, Hoi An, Saigon), you need a Vietnam e-visa or a visa exemption that covers the mainland.
How far is Phu Quoc airport from the hotels?
The airport is in the middle of the west coast. Duong Dong town and Long Beach are about 10–20 minutes by car; the resorts of the north (Ganh Dau, Bai Dai) about 35–50 minutes; and the southern resorts around An Thoi and Bai Kem about 25–35 minutes.
When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?
November to April, the dry season, when the sea on the west coast is calm and clear. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings showers and rougher seas on the west coast, although resorts stay open and prices are lower.
