Hanoi Tours and the Best Day Trips from Hanoi

Which day trips are worth the drive, which deserve a night, and how to see the city itself with a local.

Published Oct 2026 • Updated Oct 2026 • By the Vietnam Private Tours planning team, reviewed by Van Anh (Founder & Chief Executive Officer)

Quick answer

The best day trip from Hanoi is Ninh Binh — the Trang An rowing boat or Tam Coc with Mua Cave, about 1.5 hours away. Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay works as a long day (2–3 hours each way) but is far better with one night on a cruise. In the city, spend a morning with a private guide at the mausoleum, Temple of Literature and Old Quarter, and an evening on a street-food walk.

Hanoi city tours

  • Hanoi city tour: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda, Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter with a private guide.
  • Hanoi Street Eats (evening): A walking food tour of the Old Quarter: bun cha, banh cuon, grilled skewers, egg coffee.
  • Hanoi on your own: Our guide to what to see, where to eat and how to plan two or three days in the city.

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum opens mornings only (roughly 8:00–11:00, a little later at weekends), is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and closes for about two months a year for maintenance — in 2026 from 4 September to 2 November, reopening on 3 November. Entry is free; dress modestly and leave bags at the check-in. The rest of the city tour works any day.

From our Hanoi guides

  • Do the city on day one, the countryside on day two. Jet lag makes early starts easy at the beginning of a trip — use them for Ninh Binh's boats.
  • Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake on a weekend evening, when the surrounding streets close to traffic and families come out.
  • Cross the street slowly and steadily. Motorbikes flow around a pedestrian who walks at an even pace; stopping or running is what causes trouble.
  • Book bay cruises early for March–May and October–November, when the best boats fill first.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best day tours from Hanoi?
Ninh Binh (Trang An or Tam Coc with Mua Cave), about 1.5 hours away, is the best single day trip. A Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay day cruise is possible at 2–3 hours each way, although an overnight cruise is far better. Van Long wetland and the pottery village of Bat Trang are good half-days.
Can you do Halong Bay as a day trip from Hanoi?
Yes, but it is a long day: about 2–2.5 hours each way by expressway, leaving roughly four to five hours on the water. We recommend at least one night on board so you can see the bay at sunset and early morning, when the day boats have gone.
Is a private tour in Hanoi worth it?
For a first day in Hanoi, yes. A private guide gets you through the mausoleum and Temple of Literature before the groups, explains what you are seeing, and takes you to street-food stalls you would not find alone. After that, Hanoi is easy to explore on foot.
How many days do you need in Hanoi?
Two full days for the city itself, plus a day for Ninh Binh. Most travelers then continue to Halong or Lan Ha Bay for a night, and to Sapa if they have three more days.
Is Hanoi Train Street open to visitors?
Access changes. Since 2019 local authorities have repeatedly restricted visits to the cafés along the railway for safety, and police sometimes close the section entirely. Ask your guide on the day, and never stand on the tracks when a train is due.
What is the best time of year for Hanoi tours?
October to April is dry; October–November and March–April are the most pleasant. December to February is cool and often grey. May to September is hot and humid, so plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon.
