Things to Do in Ho Chi Minh City: War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, Ben Thanh and More

Handcrafted luxury private travel experience in Vietnam designed around your passions.

Ho Chi Minh City, still widely called Saigon, is Vietnam's biggest and fastest city: colonial landmarks, war history, markets and a serious food scene. Most sights cluster in District 1, so it is easy to cover in two days.

The best things to do in Ho Chi Minh City

1. War Remnants Museum

At 28 Vo Van Tan (District 3), this is the city's most visited museum and tells the story of the war through photographs, documents and equipment. It is open about 7:30 to 17:30, and the ticket desk closes about 17:00. An adult ticket was reported at about 40,000 VND, and online tickets with a QR code are available. Allow two to three hours, go early before the groups arrive, and be prepared for graphic and emotional exhibits.

2. Reunification Palace

The former presidential palace at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, preserved as it was in 1975. Opening hours differ between sources, so check the day you plan to visit. Allow a morning.

3. Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office

The red-brick cathedral and the grand 19th-century post office sit side by side in Paris Commune Square. The cathedral has been reported as closed to visitors for renovation, so check access; the post office is free to look around and still sends mail.

4. Ben Thanh Market

A busy central market for food, souvenirs and coffee. Bargaining is expected, and an evening market outside the walls offers street food and lower prices.

5. Street food

Saigon's food is the real attraction. See our Saigon street eats tour.

6. Day trips

Go underground at Cu Chi (see our Cu Chi tunnels guide) or take a day in the Mekong Delta (Mekong Delta trip).

A 2-day Saigon plan

  • Day 1: War Remnants Museum early, Reunification Palace, then the cathedral and post office area.
  • Day 2: market, a street-food tour and the rooftop skyline at dusk, or a day trip.

Most sights are in District 1, but the War Remnants Museum is in District 3, so travel by car or taxi.

Where to stay and how to plan
