How Many Days Do You Need in Vietnam?

Is 2 weeks enough? What fits in 10 days, 1 week or 3 weeks — with sample routes and what each trip length costs as a private tour.

Published Oct 2026 • Updated Oct 2026 • By the Vietnam Private Tours planning team, reviewed by Van Anh (Founder & Chief Executive Officer)

Quick answer

Plan 12–16 days for a first trip — enough to see the north, centre and south with two internal flights. 10 days covers three bases if you fly; 7 days fits one or two regions; 3 weeks adds Sapa or Ha Giang, a beach or Cambodia. Private tours with boutique hotels start from US$1,250 per person for 7–9 days, US$1,850 for 10–12 days and US$3,000 for 14–16 days.

Why Vietnam needs more days than it looks

Vietnam is about 1,650 km (1,000 miles) from north to south. The three areas most visitors want — the north around Hanoi, the centre around Hue and Hoi An, and the south around Saigon — are each a 1 to 1.5-hour flight apart, and every move costs half a day once you add hotel check-out, airport time and the drive at each end. Halong Bay adds a 2.5–3 hour drive each way from Hanoi.

A good rule: stay at least 2 nights everywhere, and 3 in Hoi An. Trips that change hotel every night are the ones travellers on forums describe as exhausting.

Sample routes

7 days — the north

Hanoi (2 nights) → Ninh Binh (1 night) → Halong or Lan Ha Bay cruise (1 night) → Hanoi (2 nights). No flights; ideal October to April.

10 days — the classic three

Hanoi (2) → bay cruise (1) → fly to Da Nang → Hoi An (3, with a day in Hue) → fly to Saigon (2, with a Mekong Delta day). See From Saigon to Hanoi & Halong Bay, which runs the same route in the other direction.

14 days — north to south without rushing

Hanoi (2) → Ninh Binh (1) → bay cruise (1) → Hanoi or Hai Phong, fly to Hue (2) → Hoi An (3) → fly to Saigon (2) → Mekong Delta (1) → Saigon (1). This is the shape of our Highlights of Vietnam trip; families can follow the Family Vietnam Tour.

3 weeks — highlights plus mountains, beach or Cambodia

Take the 14-day route and add one or two of: Sapa or Ha Giang (3 nights), Phong Nha caves (2 nights), Phu Quoc or Con Dao (3 nights), Siem Reap for Angkor Wat (3–4 nights). Examples: Highlights of Vietnam & Cambodia, Vietnam In-Depth, Indochina Highlights.

When to cut, and what to cut first

  • Short on time? Drop the south before the centre — Hoi An is the stop most travellers say they wished they had longer in.
  • Travelling September to December? The central coast has its rainy and typhoon season; keep Hue/Hoi An short and flexible and spend more days in the north. See which direction to travel.
  • Travelling with older parents or young children? Add one free day for every four travelling days. Our guide for seniors explains how to pace it.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Vietnam?
For a first visit, 12 to 16 days. That covers the north (Hanoi, Halong or Lan Ha Bay, Ninh Binh), the centre (Hue and Hoi An) and the south (Saigon and the Mekong Delta) with two internal flights and no rushing. With 7 to 9 days, choose one or two regions; with 18 to 21 days you can add Sapa or Ha Giang, a beach, or Cambodia's Angkor Wat.
Is 2 weeks in Vietnam enough?
Yes. Two weeks is the most popular length and enough to see the highlights from north to south: about 4 nights in the north including one night on a bay cruise, 4 nights in Hue and Hoi An, and 4 nights in Saigon and the Mekong Delta, connected by two short flights. It is not enough to also add the far north mountains, a beach stay and Cambodia — pick one of those.
Is 10 days enough for Vietnam?
Ten days is enough for three bases if you fly between them: Hanoi with a Halong or Lan Ha Bay cruise, Hoi An (with a day in Hue or a relaxed Hoi An stay), and Saigon with a day in the Mekong Delta. Drop the south if you prefer a slower pace. Private trips of 10–12 days start from US$1,850 per person with boutique hotels.
Is 1 week in Vietnam enough?
One week is enough for one region, or two if you fly once. Good one-week plans: Hanoi + Ninh Binh + an overnight cruise; Hoi An + Hue + Da Nang; or Saigon + Mekong Delta + a beach on Phu Quoc. Trying to cover north to south in 7 days means spending most of it in transit.
Is 3 weeks too long for Vietnam?
No. Three weeks lets you travel at an easy pace and add what two weeks cannot: two nights in Sapa or the Ha Giang loop, Phong Nha caves, a beach finish (Phu Quoc, Con Dao or the central coast), or 3–4 days at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Private journeys of 18–21 days start from US$3,800 per person.
How many days should I spend in Vietnam and Cambodia?
Allow 3 weeks: about 15–16 days in Vietnam and 4–5 days in Cambodia (Siem Reap for Angkor Wat, optionally Phnom Penh). With only two weeks, plan 10–11 days in Vietnam and 3 nights in Siem Reap, and skip either the north or the south of Vietnam.
How many nights on a Halong Bay cruise?
One night is enough for most trips and is what most itineraries use. Choose two nights if the bay is a highlight for you: the transfer from Hanoi takes 2.5–3 hours each way, so a one-night cruise gives you roughly 20 hours on the water, while two nights let you reach quieter areas such as Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay.
How many days do you need in Hanoi, Hoi An and Saigon?
Hanoi: 2 full days (plus a day trip to Ninh Binh if you can). Hoi An: 3 nights, which allows a day trip to Hue or My Son. Saigon: 2 nights, one of them with a day in the Mekong Delta or at the Cu Chi tunnels.
