Halong Bay Cruise Guide: How to Choose the Right One
What a Halong Bay cruise really costs in 2026, how long to stay, which route to pick, and the details only people who book these ships every week will tell you.
Quick answer
Book an overnight cruise, not a day trip. A one-night cruise on a good four-star ship costs about US$150–250 per person (five-star: US$250–500+) with meals, kayaking, a cave and bay fees included. One night is enough for most people; choose two nights for the quieter Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long bays. Hanoi to the port is about 2–2.5 hours by car. Best months: March–May and late September–November.

| Option | Typical price per person | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Day boat (4–6 hours) | US$40–100 | Lunch, one cave, short kayak or bamboo boat; busiest routes |
| Overnight, 4-star ship | US$150–250 | Private cabin, all meals, kayaking, cave or beach, sunset and sunrise on the water |
| Overnight, 5-star ship | US$250–500+ | Balcony cabin, better food, quieter routes, fewer guests per crew |
| Two nights | About 1.7–1.9× the one-night price | A full day in the quieter outer bays |
These prices normally include the bay fees, which few cruise websites explain. Vietnam charges a sightseeing fee per person (about 250,000 VND, roughly US$10, on day routes, and about 550,000 VND, roughly US$21, per night on overnight routes) and a port fee at the Halong International Cruise Port (80,000 VND return since July 2026). On a cruise package the ship pays them for you; on a cheap day boat, check that they are not added at the pier.

Which route and which port?
The bay is divided into official cruise routes. Day boats mostly use the first routes from the city, which take in Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, Ti Top Island and the Luon Cave lagoon — beautiful, but shared with hundreds of other boats. Overnight ships use longer routes: Route 2 adds kayaking around Luon Cave and Ti Top; Routes 3 and 4 head to the Cua Van and Vung Vieng floating fishing villages, Tien Ong Cave and Ba Ham Lake, where it is much quieter.
- Tuan Chau port and the Halong International Cruise Port: most Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long ships.
- Got port on Cat Hai: most Lan Ha Bay ships, which sail into the bays east of Cat Ba Island.

A typical one-night cruise, hour by hour
- 08:00 Pick-up at your Hanoi hotel; about 2–2.5 hours on the expressway.
- 11:30–12:30 Board, safety briefing, welcome drink, lunch as the ship sails out.
- Afternoon Kayaking or a bamboo boat through a lagoon, a cave or a beach stop.
- Sunset Drinks on the sundeck; many ships run a cooking class.
- Dinner Seafood-heavy set menu; the ship anchors in a sheltered bay for the night.
- 06:00 Tai chi on deck at sunrise — the quietest moment of the trip.
- Morning A cave or fishing-village visit, brunch, back at port about 10:30–11:30, Hanoi by mid-afternoon.
How to pick a good Halong Bay cruise
- Cabin count. Ships with 10–20 cabins feel personal; 40+ cabins feel like a hotel.
- Route, not just the ship. A mid-range ship on a quiet route often beats a luxury ship on the busiest one.
- What is included. Kayaks, bay fees, port fee and transfers should be spelled out; drinks rarely are.
- Recent reviews. Look at the last three months; ships change crews and chefs.
- Cancellation terms. Ask what happens if the port authority suspends sailings for a storm.
From our team: what we tell guests before a cruise
- Pack light for the ship. Leave the big suitcase at your Hanoi hotel and bring an overnight bag; cabins are compact and the gangways are narrow.
- Bring cash for drinks and tips. Drinks are usually not included, and the crew tip box takes US dollars or dong (about US$5–10 per guest per night; see our tipping guide).
- Plan a buffer around storm season. From June to September we schedule the cruise early in the trip so there is time to rebook if the port authority stops departures.
- Pair it with Ninh Binh. The two are a perfect north-Vietnam combination: karsts at sea, then karsts in rice fields. See our Ninh Binh guide.
When a cruise is part of a private tour we plan, we book the ship and the transfers, and our Ho Chi Minh City operations team handles changes if the weather turns.
