Quick answer

From Hanoi by private car: Ninh Binh about 1.5 hours (83 km expressway), Halong Bay 2.5–3 hours, Mai Chau about 2.5 hours (135 km), Sapa 5–6 hours (about 313 km), Ha Giang most of a day (about 300 km, road only). Cat Ba is a drive plus a short car ferry from Dong Bai, which replaced the Got pier in March 2024. Only Sapa (via Lao Cai) and Ninh Binh have a useful train.

Times are typical road times without long stops. Traffic leaving Hanoi, weekends and the Lunar New Year can add a lot.

Hanoi to Sapa

The Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway opened on September 21, 2014. It is 245 km long, and at the time it cut the Hanoi–Lao Cai drive from about seven hours to about three and a half. Sapa is a further climb of about 35 km above Lao Cai, so the whole trip from central Hanoi is about 313 km and 5–6 hours by private car or limousine van.

The alternative is the night train to Lao Cai: about 7–9 hours, then 45–60 minutes by road up to Sapa. Many travelers go up by train and come back by car, or the reverse. A private car lets you stop where you like on the way, and it can take you straight to the start of a Muong Hoa Valley trek.

Hanoi to Halong Bay

There is no passenger train to Halong. By road it is about 2.5–3 hours by car or limousine van on the Hanoi–Hai Phong and Hai Phong–Ha Long expressways, and about 3–3.5 hours by regular bus. Overnight cruise ships board mostly at Tuan Chau or the Halong International Cruise Port, so tell your driver which one. A day trip means 5–6 hours on the road for a few hours on the water, which is why we suggest at least one night. See how to choose a Halong Bay cruise.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh

The 83 km Hanoi–Ninh Binh expressway makes this the easiest trip out of Hanoi: about 1.5 hours by car. Trains to Ninh Binh city take a little over two hours, but Trang An, Tam Coc and Mua Cave are still a drive from the station. From Ninh Binh, a car can continue to the Halong cruise ports in about 2.5 hours without going back into central Hanoi. That is the classic way to link karsts on land with karsts at sea.

Hanoi to Cat Ba Island

Drive the Hanoi–Hai Phong expressway and cross the Tan Vu–Lach Huyen sea bridge. Then take the car ferry from Dong Bai to Cai Vieng on Cat Ba Island. The crossing is 1.86 km, according to Hai Phong's Department of Transport. Dong Bai replaced the old Got ferry pier on March 1, 2024, so directions to "Got" are out of date. Queues at the ferry are the main unknown, especially on summer weekends and public holidays.

Hanoi to Mai Chau

Mai Chau is about 135 km from Hanoi, around 2.5 hours by car. The road runs along Thang Long Avenue and the Hoa Binh expressway, then through Cao Phong and Tan Lac and over the Thung Khe pass into the valley.

Hanoi to Ha Giang

Ha Giang is about 300 km north of Hanoi and can only be reached by road. Day and overnight buses leave from My Dinh bus station, or you can go by private car. It takes most of a day, so arrive the evening before you start the Ha Giang Loop. Since July 1, 2025, Ha Giang has been part of Tuyen Quang province, but the town and the loop keep their names.

When a private car makes sense

  • Linking places: Ninh Binh to Halong, or Halong back to Hanoi airport, without a return to the city.
  • Stopping on the way: villages, viewpoints and lunch on your schedule, not the bus timetable.
  • Families and older travelers: door-to-door pick-up with no transfers between bus, train and taxi.
  • Mountain roads: on the Ha Giang and Sapa roads, an experienced local driver handles the bends and the weather.

On our private tours, the car and driver for every leg are part of the trip, together with your guide. Tell us your route and dates and we will send a day-by-day plan with an itemized price.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Sapa from Hanoi?
About 313 km by road on the Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway, roughly 5–6 hours by private car or limousine van. The expressway itself is 245 km, from Hanoi to Lao Cai; Sapa is about 35 km further, up the mountain.
How long is the drive from Hanoi to Halong Bay?
About 2.5–3 hours by car or limousine van on the Hanoi–Hai Phong and Hai Phong–Ha Long expressways, and about 3–3.5 hours by regular bus. Most overnight cruise ships board at Tuan Chau or the Halong International Cruise Port.
What is the best way to get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?
By car on the 83 km Hanoi–Ninh Binh expressway, about 1.5 hours. The train reaches Ninh Binh city in a little over 2 hours, but Trang An and Tam Coc are still a drive from the station, so most visitors go by private car.
Is there a train from Hanoi to Sapa?
Not to Sapa itself. Night trains run from Hanoi to Lao Cai in about 7–9 hours, and Sapa is then about 35 km by road, 45–60 minutes. Many travelers take the train one way and a car the other.
Can you drive from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island?
Yes, with one ferry. Drive the Hanoi–Hai Phong expressway, cross the Tan Vu–Lach Huyen sea bridge, then take the car ferry from Dong Bai to Cai Vieng on Cat Ba: a 1.86 km crossing. Dong Bai replaced the old Got ferry pier on March 1, 2024, so older guides that mention Got are out of date.
How far is Mai Chau from Hanoi?
About 135 km, around 2.5 hours by car, via Thang Long Avenue and the Hoa Binh expressway, then through Cao Phong, Tan Lac and the Thung Khe pass.
How far is Ha Giang from Hanoi?
About 300 km north of Hanoi, and reachable only by road: day and overnight buses leave from My Dinh bus station, or you can go by private car. It is most of a day on the road, so plan the Ha Giang Loop to start the next morning.
Can I go from Ninh Binh straight to Halong Bay?
Yes. A car can drive from Ninh Binh to the Halong cruise ports on the expressways without going back into central Hanoi, in about 2.5 hours, so Ninh Binh fits right before or after a cruise.
