Ninh Binh Travel Guide: Trang An, Tam Coc and Mua Cave

Halong Bay's karsts, set in rice fields instead of the sea. Here is how to see Ninh Binh well — and when to dodge the crowds.

Quick answer

Ninh Binh is about 1.5 hours from Hanoi and well worth one night. Take the Trang An rowing-boat trip (about 2.5–3 hours, UNESCO site, about 250,000 VND / US$10), climb the 500 steps of Mua Cave at sunset, and cycle the lanes around Tam Coc in the morning. Go in late May–early June for golden rice fields, or March–May and September–November for the best weather.

Trang An or Tam Coc?

If you only have time for one boat, take Trang An. The loop is longer, passes under more cave arches, stops at small island temples, and the scenery feels wild. Tam Coc is the classic "three caves" trip along the Ngo Dong River. It is shorter and busier, but in late May and early June, when the rice is gold on both banks, it is one of the most beautiful sights in Vietnam.

Either way, your rower — usually a woman from the village, often rowing with her feet — will expect a small tip at the end: 50,000–100,000 VND for the boat is kind.

A two-day Ninh Binh itinerary

  1. Day 1, morning: leave Hanoi at 8:00, arrive around 9:30, visit the Hoa Lu temples.
  2. Day 1, midday: lunch of goat meat and crispy "burnt" rice (com chay), the local specialties.
  3. Day 1, afternoon: check in to a homestay or boutique resort among the karsts; climb Mua Cave at about 16:30 for sunset.
  4. Day 2, early: be at the Trang An pier when it opens in the morning — you will have the river almost to yourself.
  5. Day 2, late morning: cycle the lanes behind Tam Coc, then drive on to Halong Bay (about 2.5 hours) or back to Hanoi.

From our guides in Ninh Binh

  • Go early, always. Tour buses from Hanoi arrive from about 10:00. Before that the piers are quiet and the light on the karsts is soft.
  • Skip Bai Dinh at weekends. It is a place of pilgrimage, wonderful on a weekday, overwhelming on a Sunday.
  • Bring a hat and water for Mua Cave. The steps are steep and there is little shade.
  • Ninh Binh plus Halong Bay is the best two-to-three-day loop in the north. See our Halong Bay cruise guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ninh Binh worth visiting?
Yes. Ninh Binh is the easiest place in Vietnam to see limestone karsts rising out of rice fields, and the Trang An landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is only about an hour and a half from Hanoi, quieter than Halong Bay on the water, and best seen from a small rowing boat.
How many days do you need in Ninh Binh?
One night is ideal: arrive in the morning, take the Trang An or Tam Coc boat, climb Mua Cave for sunset, and cycle the back lanes the next morning before the tour groups arrive. A day trip from Hanoi works if you are short on time; two nights lets you add Cuc Phuong National Park or Van Long.
Trang An or Tam Coc: which boat trip is better?
Trang An is longer (about 2.5–3 hours), passes through more caves and temples, and is our first choice. Tam Coc is shorter (about 1.5–2 hours) along the Ngo Dong River, and is spectacular in late May and early June when the rice fields turn gold. Both cost about 250,000 VND (US$10) per adult.
How do I get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?
By car on the expressway, about 1.5 hours from central Hanoi. Trains take a little over two hours and leave you in Ninh Binh city, still 20–30 minutes from Trang An and Tam Coc. Most visitors use a private car or a tour, which also solves getting between the sights.
What is the best time to visit Ninh Binh?
Late May to early June for the golden rice harvest in Tam Coc; March to May and September to November for comfortable weather. Summer is hot (often 35°C) with storms; December to February is cool and misty. Avoid weekends and the Lunar New Year week, when Vietnamese pilgrims fill Bai Dinh and the boat piers.
How much are the tickets in Ninh Binh?
As of October 2026: Trang An about 250,000 VND per adult including the rowing boat; Tam Coc–Bich Dong about 250,000 VND; Mua Cave about 100,000–150,000 VND. Children under 1 m are free. Prices change, so check at the gate.
