Tipping in Vietnam: Guides, Drivers, Cruises and Restaurants

Is tipping expected, how much to give your guide and driver, and what to do on a Halong Bay cruise.

Published Oct 2026 • Updated Oct 2026 • By the Vietnam Private Tours planning team, reviewed by Van Anh (Founder & Chief Executive Officer)

Quick answer

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Vietnam but is expected in tourism. Guidelines: private guide US$10–15 per day, driver US$5–8 per day, cruise crew US$5–10 per guest per night (tip box), hotel porters about US$1 per bag. Local restaurants don’t expect tips; 5–10% is kind in upscale places without a service charge. Dong or clean US dollar notes are both fine.

Practical tips

  • Carry small notes: VND 50,000, 100,000 and 200,000 notes are the most useful.
  • Use an envelope or fold the money discreetly and hand it over with both hands and a thank-you.
  • If one guide was with you in Hanoi and another in Hoi An, tip each at the end of their days.
  • Budget about US$15–25 per day for a couple’s guide and driver tips; tips are not included in our private tour prices.

Frequently asked questions

Do you tip in Vietnam?
Tipping is not traditional in Vietnam and never compulsory, but it is now expected in tourism and always appreciated, especially by guides, drivers and cruise staff whose wages are modest. In local restaurants and street food stalls tipping is not expected; leaving small change is a kind gesture.
How much should I tip a private tour guide in Vietnam?
As a guideline, about US$10–15 per day for a private guide from a couple or small family, and a little more for larger groups or an exceptional guide. Give it at the end of your time with that guide, in an envelope, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong.
How much should I tip the driver?
About US$5–8 per day for a private driver, given at the end of your time together. For a single airport transfer, US$2–5 is generous.
How much do you tip on a Halong Bay cruise?
Most cruises have a shared tip box for the crew. Around US$5–10 per guest per night is typical; give more if the service was excellent. Some luxury ships already include a service charge — check before you tip.
Should I tip in USD or Vietnamese dong?
Either is accepted. Dong is easier for the recipient to use; if you tip in US dollars, give clean, untorn notes, as damaged notes are hard to exchange in Vietnam.
Are tips included in a private tour price?
Usually not. Most private tour prices, including ours, exclude tips so that you can reward the people who looked after you. Budget about US$15–25 per day for a couple’s guide and driver tips combined.
