Halong Bay vs Lan Ha Bay vs Bai Tu Long: Which Should You Choose?

Is Halong Bay worth it, which bay is less crowded, how many nights to stay, and what a good cruise really costs in 2026.

Published Oct 2026 • Updated Oct 2026 • By the Vietnam Private Tours planning team, reviewed by Van Anh (Founder & Chief Executive Officer)

Quick answer

Halong Bay is worth it — on an overnight cruise, not a day trip. For fewer boats and better kayaking, choose Lan Ha Bay; for the famous big caves and the widest choice of ships, Ha Long Bay; for the quietest water, Bai Tu Long Bay. One night suits most trips; two nights if the bay is a highlight. A good overnight cruise costs about US$150–250 per person (4-star) or US$250–500+ (5-star).

Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba archipelago — which includes Lan Ha Bay — are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you are not trading the “real” Halong for a lesser one by choosing Lan Ha.

1 night or 2 nights?

A one-night cruise is really about 20–22 hours: you board around midday, have lunch, visit a cave or beach, kayak, watch sunset, and sail back after breakfast and an early activity. It is enough to experience the bay and keeps your itinerary moving.

Choose two nights if: the bay is the thing you most want to see; you want a full day of kayaking and swimming in Lan Ha; you are travelling in June–September, when a storm can cancel a day; or you are travelling with older parents or young children and want one slow day in the middle of the trip.

Before comparing quotes, check: the actual route (Lan Ha in the name does not always mean Lan Ha on the water), whether transfers from Hanoi are included, the cabin type, drinks, and the cancellation policy if the port closes for weather. In our private tours the cruise, cabin and transfer are part of one itemised price — see the price guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Halong Bay worth it?
Yes — the limestone seascape is one of Asia’s great sights and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What disappoints people is crowding and a rushed day trip, not the bay itself. Stay at least one night on a cruise, and if you dislike crowds choose a route in Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay rather than the busiest central Ha Long routes.
Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay — which is better?
For most travellers, Lan Ha Bay. It has the same karst scenery with far fewer boats, calmer coves for kayaking and small beaches for swimming. Ha Long Bay is better if you want the famous large caves (such as Sung Sot) and the widest choice of cruise ships. Bai Tu Long Bay is the quietest of the three.
Is a Halong Bay cruise worth it, or is a day trip enough?
An overnight cruise is worth it; a day trip from Hanoi usually is not. The transfer is about 2.5–3 hours each way, so a day trip gives you around 4 hours on the water among the busiest boats. One night lets you see the bay at sunset and sunrise, when it is at its best.
Should I do 1 night or 2 nights on a Halong Bay cruise?
One night suits most itineraries. In practice you board around midday and are back on land before lunch the next day, so it is about 20–22 hours. Choose two nights if the bay is a highlight of your trip: you reach quieter areas, have a full day of kayaking and swimming, and are less affected if weather changes the schedule.
Which cruise is best for Halong Bay?
There is no single best ship; choose by route first (Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long for fewer boats), then by size (smaller ships of 10–25 cabins feel more personal), then by cabin (private balcony is worth it). Check recent reviews for food and the actual route sailed — some ships marketed as Lan Ha spend most of the time in Ha Long. We match the ship to your dates and party rather than selling one fleet.
How much does a Halong Bay cruise cost?
As a guide for 2026, an overnight cruise costs roughly US$150–250 per person on a good 4-star ship and US$250–500+ on a 5-star or boutique ship, sharing a double cabin, usually including meals, kayaking and cave or beach visits. Day cruises are cheaper but much more crowded. Transfers from Hanoi and drinks are often extra. Prices rise on weekends, holidays and in peak season.
Is a Halong Bay cruise price for 2 people?
Usually no. Cruise prices are almost always quoted per person, based on two people sharing a cabin. A solo traveller pays a single supplement. Always check whether transfers, kayaking and drinks are included before comparing two quotes.
When is the best time to cruise Halong Bay?
October to December and March to May usually bring the best mix of visibility and comfortable temperatures. January–March can be cool and misty (atmospheric, but views are shorter). June–September is hot and good for swimming, but it is storm season: the authorities cancel sailings when a storm approaches, so keep a spare day in your plan.
