The classic northern route

  1. Hanoi (2 nights): the Old Quarter, Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and an evening street-food walk.
  2. Ninh Binh (1 night): the Trang An rowing boat and Mua Cave at sunset, about 1.5 hours from Hanoi. See our Ninh Binh guide.
  3. Halong or Lan Ha Bay (1 night): an overnight cruise with kayaking and a cave visit, about 2.5 hours from Ninh Binh. Our cruise guide explains how to choose.
  4. Sapa (2 nights, optional): village treks through the rice terraces, 5.5–6 hours by road from Hanoi. See Sapa trekking.
  5. Ha Giang (3–4 nights, optional): the Ma Pi Leng Pass and limestone plateau near the Chinese border. See the Ha Giang Loop guide.

Historically, Vietnam was divided at the 17th parallel from 1954: the communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam in the north and the US-backed Republic of Vietnam in the south. The war ended in 1975 and the country was formally reunified in 1976. Today the old dividing line runs through the DMZ, which you can visit from Hue on a battlefield tour.

From our guides in Hanoi

  • Pack a warm layer from December to February. Hanoi can feel colder than the thermometer says, and Sapa can drop near freezing.
  • Choose Lan Ha Bay if you want fewer boats around you; it is reached from Hai Phong and is part of the same seascape.
  • Avoid the mountains in heavy rain. From July to September landslides can close roads to Sapa and Ha Giang for a day or two; leave a buffer day.
  • Do Ha Giang with a driver unless you are an experienced motorbike rider; the passes are steep and traffic includes trucks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best North Vietnam tour?
For a first visit, Hanoi plus Ninh Binh plus an overnight Halong or Lan Ha Bay cruise in five to seven days, with Sapa if you have two or three more. Our Best of Northern Vietnam (6 days, from US$890) and North Vietnam for Adventure (9 days, from US$1,250) are built around that route and can be changed to your dates and pace.
How many days do you need in North Vietnam?
Five days covers Hanoi, Ninh Binh and one night on Halong or Lan Ha Bay. Seven to nine days adds Sapa or Mai Chau. Ha Giang needs three to four days on its own, so allow ten or more to combine it with the bays.
When is the best time to visit North Vietnam?
October to April is dry; October–November and March–April are the most comfortable. December to February is cool to cold, around 10–17°C in Hanoi and colder in the mountains. May to September is hot and humid with summer storms, but it is when the rice terraces are greenest; Sapa's terraces turn gold in September.
Is there still a North and South Vietnam?
No. Vietnam has been one country since reunification in 1976, the year after the war ended in 1975. Travelers still talk about the north, center and south because the regions differ in climate, food, accent and atmosphere, but there is no border between them.
Was North Vietnam communist?
Yes. The Democratic Republic of Vietnam in the north, led by Ho Chi Minh and the Workers' Party, was a communist state; the Republic of Vietnam in the south was backed by the United States. After 1975 the country was reunified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, governed today by the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Should I visit North or South Vietnam first?
It depends on the season more than the order. From December to February start in the south, which is hot and dry, and finish in the cooler north; from March to May either direction works. See our guide to traveling north to south or south to north.
