Flying from the US to Vietnam

  • Nonstop: The only nonstop flight between the US and Vietnam is Vietnam Airlines from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City (about 14–16 hours depending on direction, around four flights a week). From other US cities you connect, usually in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong.
  • Time difference: Vietnam is on UTC+7 all year (no daylight saving): 11 hours ahead of New York in summer and 12 in winter, 14 hours ahead of Los Angeles in summer and 15 in winter.
  • Open-jaw tickets: Book an open-jaw ticket, into one end of the country and home from the other, so you never backtrack. Because the San Francisco nonstop lands in Ho Chi Minh City, many US travelers start in the south and end in Hanoi.
  • Travel days: heading west you cross the date line and arrive one or two calendar days later; flying home you "gain" a day and often land the same day you leave. Connecting trips take longer, depending on the layover.

  • Money: carry some Vietnamese dong in cash for markets, street food and tips; ATMs are easy to find in cities.

  • When to book: four to six months ahead for October to April, earlier for Christmas and Tet.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Vietnam tour package from the USA?
Our private packages start from US$1,250 per person for 7–9 days, US$1,850 for 10–12 days, US$3,000 for 14–16 days and US$3,800 for 18–21 days, with boutique hotels, a private guide and driver and domestic flights. Add round-trip flights from the US.
Are there direct flights from the USA to Vietnam?
The only nonstop flight between the US and Vietnam is Vietnam Airlines from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City (about 14–16 hours depending on direction, around four flights a week). From other US cities you connect, usually in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong.
Do Americans need a visa for Vietnam?
Americans need an e-visa: apply at evisa.gov.vn, US$25 single or US$50 multiple entry, up to 90 days, about three working days to process. Apply at least two to three weeks before you fly.

Do Vietnam tour packages include international flights?
Ours do not: you book your own flights to and from Vietnam so you keep your airline, miles and flexibility, and we book every domestic flight inside Vietnam as part of the package. We are happy to suggest the best routes and an open-jaw ticket for your itinerary.
