Quick answer

Book four to six months ahead for travel between October and April, and six to nine months ahead for Christmas, New Year and Tet (February 4–10, 2027). For May to September, two to three months is usually enough. Apply for the e-visa at least two to three weeks before you fly.

How far ahead, by travel dates

When you travelBookWhy
Christmas and New Year6–9 months aheadThe busiest weeks for international visitors; best hotels and cruises sell out
Tet: around February 4–10, 20276–9 months aheadDomestic flights, trains and hotels are full; surcharges apply
October – April (peak season)4–6 months aheadBest weather for a north-to-south trip; top hotels and cabins go first
Around April 30 and May 13–4 months aheadNational holiday; beaches and flights busy with Vietnamese travelers
May – September2–3 months aheadQuieter for international visitors; Vietnamese summer holidays fill beach resorts

For Tet 2027, domestic airlines put their extra flights on sale on August 25, 2026, and Vietnam Railways opened Tet train tickets on September 5, 2026. If you are traveling over Tet, the sooner you decide, the more choice you have.

A booking timeline that works

  1. 6–9 months out: choose your dates and the length of the trip; book international flights when fares look right.
  2. 4–6 months out: fix the route, hotels and Halong Bay cruise; this is when a private operator can still get you the rooms you want.
  3. 2–3 months out: internal flights, special requests (cooking classes, a private dinner, a photographer), travel insurance.
  4. 2–3 weeks out: apply for the e-visa (about three working days to process) and complete any pre-arrival forms.
  5. The week before: confirm pick-up times and check the weather, especially on the central coast from September to December.

Booking late?

It can still work. A private trip is planned around what is available, so we can usually put a good itinerary together in a few weeks, with a day-by-day plan and an itemized price within 24 hours of your inquiry. Over Christmas, New Year and Tet, be flexible on your hotel or cruise and on the order of the route.

Tell us your dates and we will tell you honestly what is still available.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book a Vietnam tour?
Four to six months ahead for travel between October and April, and six to nine months for Christmas, New Year and Tet. For May to September, two to three months is usually enough. A private tour can be arranged at shorter notice, but the best hotels and cruise cabins go first.
Is it too late to book Vietnam for this winter?
Usually not. A private trip can be planned within a few weeks; we send a day-by-day plan with an itemized price within 24 hours. What you may lose at short notice is your first choice of hotel or Halong Bay cruise over Christmas, New Year and Tet, so be ready with a second choice.
When should I apply for the Vietnam e-visa?
At least two to three weeks before you fly. Processing takes about three working days, but allow for delays and holidays. Americans apply at evisa.gov.vn; it costs US$25 single entry or US$50 multiple entry, for up to 90 days.
When do I need to book Halong Bay cruises?
Two to four months ahead for October to April, earlier for suites and balcony cabins, and as early as possible for Christmas, New Year and Tet. Many cruises add a surcharge on those dates.
Can I book a Vietnam tour after I arrive?
Day trips, yes. A full itinerary with good hotels, internal flights and a cruise is much harder to put together on arrival in peak season, and usually costs more.
