Vietnam Itinerary 7 Days: One Week, Done Well

The one-week route our specialists plan most often, day by day, with real travel times, a summer alternative and tips for flying in from the US.

Quick answer

The best 7-day Vietnam itinerary stays in the north: Hanoi (2 nights) → Ninh Binh (1) → an overnight cruise on Lan Ha or Halong Bay (1) → Hanoi (2). No internal flights, ideal from October to April. From May to August, swap it for the central coast: Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang. A private version starts from US$1,250 per person.

7-day Vietnam itinerary, day by day

Day Where Plan Night
1 Hanoi Arrive, settle into an Old Quarter hotel, evening walk around Hoan Kiem Lake and a first bowl of pho. Hanoi
2 Hanoi Morning at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (closed Mon and Fri) and Temple of Literature; afternoon at Hoa Lo Prison, the “Hanoi Hilton”; street-food walk at night. Hanoi
3 Ninh Binh 1.5 hours by road. Trang An rowing boat through caves and karsts (UNESCO), then the 500 steps of Mua Cave at sunset. Ninh Binh
4 Lan Ha or Halong Bay About 2.5–3 hours to the port. Board an overnight cruise: kayaking, a cave and a swim, dinner on deck. Cruise
5 Bay → Hanoi Tai chi at sunrise, brunch on board, back in Hanoi mid-afternoon. Water puppet show in the evening. Hanoi
6 Hanoi A free day: cooking class, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, or a bike ride to the villages across the Red River. Hanoi
7 Depart Egg coffee and a last walk before the airport (about 45 minutes to Noi Bai).

Our private Best of Northern Vietnam (6 days, from US$890) follows this shape; add a night to make it seven.

Why one week should stay in one region

Vietnam is about 1,650 km long. Each internal flight costs half a day once you add the drive to the airport, check-in and the transfer at the other end. In seven days, a north-to-south route means three flights and only one full day in most places. Staying in the north gives you five full days of sightseeing instead of three.

Summer alternative: 7 days on the central coast (May–August)

When the north is hot and showery, the central coast is dry and at its best for beaches:

  • Day 1–3: fly into Da Nang, stay in Hoi An (lantern-lit old town, tailors, a cooking class, An Bang beach).
  • Day 4: drive the Hai Van Pass to Hue, the old imperial capital.
  • Day 5: the Imperial City and royal tombs by boat on the Perfume River.
  • Day 6: back to a beach hotel in Da Nang.
  • Day 7: fly out.

Avoid this version in October and November, the central coast’s typhoon and flood season (see Vietnam weather by month).

Flying in from the US

  • The only nonstop flight between the US and Vietnam is Vietnam Airlines from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City (about 14 hours, around four flights a week). From other US cities you connect, usually in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong.
  • Vietnam is on UTC+7 all year (no daylight saving): 11 hours ahead of New York in summer and 12 in winter, 14 hours ahead of Los Angeles in summer and 15 in winter. Keep day 1 light.
  • Americans need an e-visa: apply at evisa.gov.vn, US$25 single or US$50 multiple entry, up to 90 days, about three working days to process.
  • From San Francisco, the nonstop lands in Ho Chi Minh City, so for this northern route add a two-hour domestic flight to Hanoi, or choose a one-stop flight straight into Hanoi.

Frequently asked questions

Is one week enough for Vietnam?
One week is enough for one region done well, not for the whole country. The north works best: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and a night on Halong or Lan Ha Bay, with no flights. Trying to add Hoi An and Saigon in seven days means three flights and very little time in each place.
What is the best 7-day itinerary for Vietnam?
Hanoi (2 nights) → Ninh Binh (1 night) → an overnight cruise on Lan Ha or Halong Bay (1 night) → Hanoi (2 nights). It shows the capital, the karst landscapes on land and at sea, and needs no internal flights. From May to August, when the north is hot and wet, swap it for the central coast: Hoi An, Hue and the beach at Da Nang.
How much does a 7-day private tour of Vietnam cost?
A private 7–9 day tour with boutique hotels, a private guide and driver, and the cruise starts from US$1,250 per person. Five-star hotels and peak dates raise it; families and groups of four or more pay less per person.
Can I see Hanoi and Saigon in one week?
You can, with a two-hour flight between them, but you will spend a day in transit. A better one-week split is Hanoi plus Halong Bay (4 nights) and Hoi An (2 nights), or Saigon plus the Mekong Delta (3 nights) and Hoi An (3 nights).
Can I do this itinerary from the US?
The only nonstop flight between the US and Vietnam is Vietnam Airlines from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City (about 14 hours, around four flights a week). From other US cities you connect, usually in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong. With a week on the ground, the flights take about two more days, so plan nine to ten days door to door. Americans need an e-visa: apply at evisa.gov.vn, US$25 single or US$50 multiple entry, up to 90 days, about three working days to process.
