How to Choose a Vietnam Tour Company

A checklist you can apply to any operator — licence, reviews, quotes, deposits — plus whether to book locally or before you go.

Published Oct 2026 • Updated Oct 2026 • By the Vietnam Private Tours planning team, reviewed by Van Anh (Founder & Chief Executive Officer)

Quick answer

Choose an operator you can verify: an International Tour Operator licence listed in the official VNAT registry (quanlyluhanh.vn), many recent detailed reviews, a day-by-day itinerary with named hotels and an itemised price, and payment to a company account under written cancellation terms. Day tours are often cheaper booked locally; multi-stop trips are better booked 2–6 months ahead, because flights, cruise cabins and good hotels fill up.

Group tour company or private operator?

Group companies such as Intrepid or G Adventures run fixed departures for groups of roughly 12–16 people and suit solo travellers on a budget who enjoy company. A private operator builds the trip only for your party: your dates, your pace, your choice of hotels. For couples, families and older travellers the private option usually costs less extra than people expect — see private vs group vs DIY.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tour company for Vietnam?
There is no single best company — the right one depends on whether you want a group tour or a private trip, and your budget. Shortlist operators that (1) hold an International Tour Operator licence you can look up in the official VNAT registry at quanlyluhanh.vn, (2) have many recent, detailed reviews on TripAdvisor or Trustpilot, (3) send a day-by-day itinerary with named hotels and an itemised price, and (4) take payment to a company account with written cancellation terms.
Is it cheaper to book tours in Vietnam or before I go?
Single day tours (a street-food evening, a Mekong day trip) are often cheaper booked locally. Multi-stop trips are not: internal flights, the better cruise cabins and good boutique hotels sell out or rise in price close to the date, especially from December to April and around Tet (late January or February). Book the backbone of a 10+ day trip in advance and leave a few free afternoons to book small things on the spot.
Should I book with a local Vietnamese operator or a Western travel agency?
Many Western agencies sell Vietnam trips that a local ground operator actually runs. Booking a licensed local operator directly usually costs less and puts you in direct contact with the people solving problems on the ground. A Western agency can make sense if you want to pay in your home currency under your home country’s consumer rules, or are combining many countries. Either way, ask who operates the trip in Vietnam.
How far in advance should I book a private tour of Vietnam?
Three to six months ahead for travel between December and April, around Tet, or if you want specific 5-star hotels or balcony cabins on the best cruises. Two to three months is usually enough at other times. Last-minute private trips are possible, but with less choice of hotels and ships.
How do I know if a Vietnam travel agency is legit?
Ask for the International Tour Operator licence number (format XX-XXXX/YYYY/TCDL-GP LHQT) and search it at quanlyluhanh.vn — the company name, address and website listed there should match the one you are dealing with. Be wary of payment requests to a personal bank account, prices far below everyone else’s, no written itinerary or terms, and reviews that are all very short and posted at the same time.
How much deposit should I pay a Vietnam tour operator?
A deposit is normal because operators must pay hotels, cruises and flights in advance, but you should only pay after receiving a written itinerary with named hotels, the full price and the cancellation and refund terms. Pay to a company account or by card, never to a personal account, and keep the confirmation. Pay the balance on the schedule written in the terms, not earlier because of pressure.
What should be included in a private tour quote?
At minimum: named hotels and room types for each night, private car and driver, guide days and language, internal flights with baggage, the cruise name and cabin, entrance fees, which meals are included, airport transfers, and what is excluded (international flights, visa, insurance, tips, drinks). Without this, two quotes cannot be compared.
How do I book a private tour in Vietnam?
Send your dates, number of travellers, interests and hotel level to a licensed operator. You should receive a draft day-by-day itinerary and itemised price, then adjust it until it fits. Once you approve it, you pay a deposit against written terms, the operator confirms flights, hotels and cruise, and you receive final documents and a local contact before departure.
