Tet in Vietnam 2027: What Travelers Need to Know

Vietnam's Lunar New Year is the most beautiful and the most complicated week of the year to travel. Here is how to enjoy it without getting stuck.

Quick answer

Tet 2027 starts on Saturday, February 6, and the official holiday runs February 4–10, 2027. It is a wonderful time to see Vietnam celebrate, but small shops and restaurants close for one to three days, and flights, trains and hotels sell out. Stay put in one or two places over the holiday, avoid travel days just before and after it, and book four to six months ahead.

What Tet is like for a visitor

In the two weeks before Tet, Vietnam is at its most festive. Streets fill with peach blossom in the north and yellow apricot blossom and kumquat trees in the south; flower markets open in every city, and Ho Chi Minh City usually builds its flower street on Nguyen Hue. Families clean and decorate their homes, and the shops are busy until the last afternoon.

Then the country stops. On New Year's Eve, families gather for dinner and watch the midnight fireworks. On the first days of Tet, people visit relatives and go to the pagoda to pray for luck; the cities are quieter than at any other time, which makes them lovely to walk around. Many Vietnamese who live in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are back in their home provinces.

What stays open, what closes

  • Open: hotels and resorts, Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay cruises, airports, larger restaurants (often in hotels), most major sights and pagodas.
  • Closed for one to three days, sometimes a week: family-run restaurants and street food stalls, markets, many shops, tailors, some museums and smaller attractions.
  • More expensive: hotels and cruises often add a Tet surcharge, and taxis and drivers charge holiday rates. Staff who work over Tet usually receive a bonus; a small extra tip in a red envelope (lì xì) is a kind gesture.

How to plan a trip over Tet

  1. Stay in one or two places over the holiday (around February 4–10, 2027). Hoi An, Hanoi or a beach resort make good bases.
  2. Avoid traveling between cities just before Tet and in the week after it. Millions of people travel home and then back to work; roads, airports and stations are at their busiest.
  3. Book early. Domestic Tet flights for 2027 went on sale on August 25, 2026, with about 3.7 million Vietnam Airlines Group seats and 3.1 million Vietjet seats. Tet train tickets (about 300,000) went on sale on September 5, 2026.
  4. Have meals planned for the first three days. Your hotel, a guide or a cooking class takes care of it.
  5. Join in. Visit a flower market, a pagoda on the first morning, or a family meal arranged through your guide; it is the best part of traveling at Tet.

On our private trips we plan the route around the holiday, book transport months ahead and arrange meals and experiences for the days when Vietnam closes. Tell us your dates and we will tell you what is still available.

Frequently asked questions

When is Tet 2027?
The first day of Tet, the Lunar New Year, is Saturday, February 6, 2027. It is the Year of the Goat. The official public holiday runs for seven days, from Thursday, February 4 to Wednesday, February 10, 2027.
Is Tet a good time to visit Vietnam?
Yes, if you want to see Vietnam's biggest festival and you book early. Cities are decorated, flower markets fill the streets, pagodas are busy and there are fireworks at midnight on New Year's Eve. The trade-off: many family-run shops and restaurants close for a few days, and flights, trains and hotels are full and more expensive.
What is closed during Tet in Vietnam?
Small family businesses, local restaurants, markets and many shops close for one to three days around the first day of Tet, and some stay shut for a week. Hotels, resorts, cruise ships, airports, big restaurants and most major sights stay open. Plan meals with your hotel or guide on the first three days.
Should I avoid traveling in Vietnam during Tet?
Avoid moving between cities on the days just before Tet and in the week after it, when millions of Vietnamese travel home and back. Instead, settle in one or two places over the holiday itself, when cities are unusually quiet. Book flights, trains and Halong Bay cruises several months ahead.
How far ahead should I book for Tet?
As early as you can: four to six months for hotels, cruises and a private guide. Domestic Tet flights for 2027 went on sale on August 25, 2026 and Tet train tickets on September 5, 2026. Popular dates sell out first.
