Best Time to Visit Ha Long Bay: Weather and Crowds Month by Month

Quick answer

The best time to travel to Halong Bay is March to May and late September to November. Most Vietnamese guides call April to June the sweet spot: warm, little rain, calm water. Skip July and August. That is storm season, and storms can ground the boats. December to February is dry but cold and often foggy. Weather is half the story. Vietnamese public holidays fill the bay too, so check the dates below.

Weather in Ha Long Bay at a glance

Ha Long sits about 160 km from Hanoi, roughly 2.5 hours by expressway. A day trip means about five hours on the road, so an overnight cruise gives you far more time on the water. Boats leave from Tuan Chau and Bai Chay ports.

The yearly average is reported at about 23.7°C (75°F), and most rain falls from May to September. Figures differ a little between Vietnamese sources, so treat them as a guide and confirm locally.

Season (Vietnamese calendar) Months Reported temperature What to expect
Spring January to March January: 8 to 20°C (46 to 68°F). February to March: 19 to 30°C (66 to 86°F) Cold start, mist and drizzle, clearer by March
Summer April to June April highs near 30°C (86°F). Highs of 34 to 35°C (93 to 95°F) from mid-May Clear in April, then hot, humid and wetter
Autumn July to September About 30°C (86°F) on average Hot, heavy rain, peak storm risk
Winter October to December October to November: warm to cool. December: 8 to 20°C (46 to 68°F) Fine and mild in October and November, cold and dry in December

Vietnamese calendars count three months per season, so "autumn" starts in July. The weather does not follow the labels, so go by the months.

The best windows: March to May and late September to November

March to May. This stretch starts gray and turns clear. By April the skies open. Vietnamese guides rate April to June as warm with little rain, the best window for a family trip. By mid-May the heat builds.

Late September to November. Vietnamese guides say September to November is mild enough for swimming. Late storms can still appear, but they are less frequent and weaker than in July to September.

September itself is a gamble. In September 2018, Quang Ninh suspended permits for sea tourism and overnight stays at sea ahead of Super Typhoon No. 6. In September 2024, 27 tour boats sank in Typhoon Yagi, local press reported, and three sightseeing routes reopened only on September 13. Not every September goes this way. Buy travel insurance, and read your operator's weather policy before you pay.

Months to avoid: July and August

Storm risk is high, and when a storm threatens, Quang Ninh authorities suspend boat permits. On July 3, 2019, the province halted permits for tourist boats ahead of Storm No. 2, and vessels sheltered. The result: cancelled or rerouted cruises and a short window to rebook. School holidays also push prices to their yearly high. Vietnamese guides advise cutting back on swimming and water sports in these months. If July or August is your only option, book a flexible rate and swim on clear days only.

The cold months: December to February

Halong Bay in December

Halong Bay weather in December is cold, dry and often foggy. Reported temperatures run from 8 to 20°C (46 to 68°F). Northeast winds make the deck feel colder than the number. Mornings can be hazy, so the karsts may show up late. Rain is light, because the dry season runs roughly December to April, based on long-term Quang Ninh records. Don't plan on swimming. Pack a warm jacket, a hat and gloves, and pick a boat with an indoor lounge.

Ha Long Bay weather in January and February

Ha Long Bay weather in January is the coldest of the year, in the same 8 to 20°C range. Bring layers. Light mist and drizzle linger into February, and the water is still too cold for swimming. The cold months are not empty, though. Local press counted over 610,000 visitors at the bay from January to March 2024, and more than 529,000 of them were international.

Vietnamese holidays: when the bay and the roads fill up

Most weather guides miss this. Vietnamese families travel on public holidays, and they head for the coast. Roads jam, boats sell out, and some local services close or run limited hours. Confirm locally.

Holiday Date What to expect
Tet (Lunar New Year) February 6, 2027. Public-sector leave February 4 to 10 Many shops close and transport sells out
Reunification Day and International Labor Day April 30 to May 1, every year The busiest holiday of the first half of the year. Hotels and boats around the bay are usually full. It falls in the first month of summer, as the heat builds. Quang Ninh reported about 500,000 visitor arrivals in 2025, up 16%
National Day September 2 to 3, 2027 Crowds inside storm season
School holidays June to August Busy weekends, highest room prices

A local's view: Bai Chay and Hon Gai on holidays

A Ha Long native on our team puts it bluntly. On April 30, Bai Chay is fully booked, and some guests end up sleeping in their cars. On fireworks nights the Bai Chay Bridge locks up, and getting home can take about five hours. On the Hon Gai side, you may have to look farther out to find a decent room. Room rates on holiday dates often run two to three times the normal price. Our advice: skip these dates, or book rooms and your cruise weeks ahead, and plan to be off the roads by early afternoon.

International visitors peak from late November to early January. Nine Travel ranks December and January as Vietnam's most expensive months, and April and May among the cheaper ones, outside April 30.

Which month suits you

Your goal Go in
Clear days and calm cruising April, October, November
Swimming May to October, on clear days. Cut back in July and August
Cold-weather cruising, little rain December to February, with a warm jacket
Lower prices April and May, outside April 30
Fewer crowds Avoid Tet week, April 30 to May 1, September 2 and June to August weekends

Storm checks before you book

Storm season runs roughly June to December, based on Vietnamese research covering 1960 to 2013. Lonely Planet puts the highest risk in August and September. Ask your operator three things. What happens if permits are suspended? Do you get a refund or a new date? How will you be told? In the two weeks before you go, check the national forecast center at nchmf.gov.vn.
