From Battlefields to Beaches: Quy Nhon & Beyond
Travel to the central cost of Vietnam for a comprehensive discovery of history, culture and nature centered in Quy Nhon.
Travel north from Quy Nhon to the Bong Son area, an area with many memories from the Vietnam War including the important moments in 1966 that we might focus on Operation Masher. Visit local villages and key historical sites and listen to the local people share their perspectives; they experienced the range of events. As we walk along the countryside temples and peaceful village walks we can reflect on how these seemingly peaceful spots were once the heart of war in Vietnam. For those interested we will stop (optionally) at My Tho village, a former US patrol route; it provides some additional perspective on the war’s impact on every day life.
We will continue inland taking beautiful mountain roads to the town of An Khe in the central highlands. On route we travel through An Khe Pass, a vital supply route during the war, surrounded at first by breathtaking hills and lots of beautiful greenery. Explore An Khe town and hopefully enjoy visiting its local memorials or museums so we can gain further perspective on this significant region of Vietnam’s wartime history.
Back in Quy Nhon, we can witness the city’s historical and cultural heritage. Start with the beautiful Twin Cham Towers ( Tháp Đôi), impressive examples of the Cham Kingdom’s architectural legacy. Visit Quy Hoa village, the home to the leprosy hospital and the poetic inspiration to a famous Vietnamese poet Han Mac Tu.
If relaxing on the beach is more your speed, you can spend a few hours on Ky Co Beach with its shining white sand, turquoise waters and unique rocks or take a stroll down Bai Xep fishing village, where colorful boats and a simple seaside existence embody the area’s character. We will close our journey with a specially organized Farewell dinner overlooking the sea, stillin the fascination of Vietnam’s history, culture and environment in mind.
