Where to Stay in Hanoi: The Best Areas Compared

Old Quarter, French Quarter or West Lake? Which neighborhood suits your trip, how noisy it is, and the hotels we book in each.

Published Oct 2026 • Updated Oct 2026 • By the Vietnam Private Tours planning team, reviewed by Van Anh (Founder & Chief Executive Officer)

Quick answer

Stay in the Old Quarter for street food and atmosphere, or the French Quarter for quiet nights and grand hotels; both are a short walk from Hoan Kiem Lake. West Lake suits longer stays and families. Two to three nights is enough for most trips, and the Old Quarter is about 45–60 minutes from Noi Bai airport.

The Old Quarter

The tangle of streets north of Hoan Kiem Lake, each once named after the goods sold there, is Hanoi at its most alive: pho at dawn, coffee on plastic stools, markets and workshops. It is the easiest base for a first visit; almost everything is walkable. On weekends the lake and the surrounding streets become a walking zone from Friday 7 pm to Sunday midnight, which is fun but loud. Hotels we book here include the Hanoi Pearl Hotel and the Silk Path Hotel.

The French Quarter

South and east of the lake, the French Quarter has the Opera House, wide shaded streets and Hanoi's grandest hotels. It is quieter at night and a 10–15 minute walk from the Old Quarter. For a special stay, the Sofitel Legend Metropole, open since 1901, and Capella Hanoi, an opera-themed hotel a block from the Opera House, are two of the best hotels in Vietnam.

West Lake and Ba Dinh

West Lake (Tay Ho) is greener and more spacious, with lakeside cafes and a calmer pace; it suits families and longer stays, and the Sofitel Plaza sits between West Lake and Truc Bach Lake. Ba Dinh, around the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature, is quiet and convenient for early sightseeing but sleepy at night.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Hanoi?
For a first visit, the Old Quarter or the French Quarter, both around Hoan Kiem Lake. The Old Quarter puts you among the street food and markets; the French Quarter is calmer, with wide boulevards and the grand hotels. West Lake suits longer or repeat stays.
Is it better to stay in the Old Quarter or the French Quarter?
Stay in the Old Quarter if you want to step out into street life and do not mind noise; choose the French Quarter if you want quiet nights, bigger rooms and five-star hotels, and are happy to walk 10–15 minutes to the Old Quarter.
Is the Old Quarter noisy at night?
Yes, especially on weekends, when the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake are closed to traffic from Friday 7 pm to Sunday midnight and fill with people, music and bars. Ask for a room at the back or on a high floor, or stay on the edge of the Old Quarter.
How many nights should I stay in Hanoi?
Two or three nights: one full day for the city, and a day trip to Ninh Binh or the drive to Halong Bay from there. Add a night if you arrive on a long-haul flight from the US.
How far is the Old Quarter from Hanoi airport?
About 30 km, usually 45–60 minutes by car from Noi Bai airport, longer at rush hour. We meet you at arrivals on our private trips.
